This guide will walk you through downloading the app, connecting your API key, importing images, generating alt text, and using the app's main features.
Download the WriteAlt Windows App
Download the latest version of the WriteAlt Windows app from the Microsoft Store:

Once installed, launch the application and continue with the setup steps below.
Before You Start
Before using the WriteAlt Windows app, you'll need:
- A WriteAlt account
- A valid WriteAlt API key
- An internet connection for AI generation

Step 1: Connect Your API Key
Before generating alt text, connect your WriteAlt account.
- Log in to your WriteAlt account.
- Open the API settings page:

- Open the WriteAlt Windows app.
- Paste the API key into the WriteAlt API Key field.
- Click Connect.
Once connected, the app will be ready to generate AI alt text using your available credits.
Step 2: Import Images
To generate alt text, you'll first need to import images.
Add Images
- Open the Images section.
- Click Add.
- Select one or more images from your computer.
Drag and Drop
You can also drag image files directly from Windows Explorer into the application.
WriteAlt supports bulk importing, allowing you to process large image collections quickly.
Step 3: Organize Images into Folders
Folders help keep projects organized.
Common examples include:

To create a folder:
- Click the + button in the Folders section.

Before generating alt text:
- Open the Language dropdown.
- Select your preferred language.
- Continue with generation.

Step 5: Add SEO Keywords
The SEO Keyword field allows you to guide AI generation.

Step 6: Generate AI Alt Text
After importing your images:
- Select one or more images.

- Click Generate Alt Text.
WriteAlt will analyze each image and generate descriptive alt text automatically.
The generated alt text appears directly beneath each image and can be copied, edited, or exported.
Step 7: Scan a Website for Missing Alt Text
The Website Scanner helps identify images on a website that may be missing alt text.
To scan a website:
- Open the Scan section.
- Enter a website URL.
- Click Scan.
- Wait for the scan to complete.
WriteAlt will discover images found on the website and display the results for review.
Step 8: Import Website Images
After a scan completes:
- Review the images found on the website.
- Select the images you want to work with.
- Import the selected images into WriteAlt.
Imported images can then be organized into folders and processed just like locally uploaded images.
Step 9: Generate Alt Text for Website Images
Once website images have been imported:
- Select the images.
- Choose a language.
- Add optional SEO keywords.
- Generate alt text.
This allows you to improve accessibility and image SEO across existing websites without manually writing descriptions.
Step 10: Export Results
WriteAlt allows you to export generated alt text records.
To export:
- Select the images you want to export.
- Click Export.
- Choose CSV export.
